How to Stop Drinking Soda?
Rough Transcript (listening is best)
Soda is a hard habit to kick...
A soda habit is hard to kick, but don’t worry, I’m going to show you exactly how to stop drinking soda in this episode. I know it might be a daunting task - it is a hard habit to kick. If you drink soda, it’s probably been part of your life for a long time.
Any habit can be hard to kick but soda can be particularly tricky because it is so addictive. This episode was almost too hard to stretch out to make into an actual episode -because the steps to stop drinking soda are so stinkin' simple.
Intro
Welcome if this is your first time listening - I’m Audrey Christie - I’m a functional and integrative nurse nutritionist and energy medicine practitioner. I help women stop chasing symptoms and find relief and ultimately learn how to heal their bodies from autoimmune disease.
Quitting Soda is important for your health...
Bottom line - soda or diet soda is super hard to kick, the same goes for energy drinks. So if you have been wondering how to stop drinking soda and all its toxic ingredients, I want to assure you there's a slow way to do it. If you're worried about caffeine withdrawal headaches, missing it too much, or just feeling nervous about a significant shift in your life -- let's work on it slowly. Baby steps often get us to our destination in a far more lasting way than trying it cold turkey.
Leaving behind soda improves literally every aspect of your health. It’s one of the first steps to healing your body on so many levels, including mental health.
Specifically, you will:
- Reduce or eliminate anxiety
- Improve the health fo your teeth
- Strengthen your bones
- Improve your immune system
- Reduce sugar cravings
- Increase your energy
A Quick Story for you from a client...
I absolutely adore getting feedback from you - ratings, reviews on your fav podcast provider, comments and messages on social, and feedback from clients in my 1:1s and group programs...it helps me to help more people and sometimes I get the BEST questions too -
She had given up everything, was eating essentially a paleo, grain-free, diet, heavy on veggies, heavy on meat no grains no dairy no nightshades (those were the devil). Her symptoms kept leaving and coming back… why is that? Because her root causes had not been addressed. She kept getting accused of not eating clean...enough.
So instead of removing another food group… we did some food allergy testing to see exactly what was coming up for her - low and behold - all of her sensitivity was to - plants.
That is a huge indicator that there are some major gut issues going on…
Fast forward to the end of her treatment plan - symptoms of autoimmune GONE. We worked on stress, gut health, energetic wellbeing. Simple right? And guess what - she is back to eating nightshades again - symptom-free.
How to stop drinking soda - the steps
It's so simple - just replace 1 soda a day (or every other day if you have a single soda/day habit) with one of the alternatives I list below. Each week, add another replacement for soda. So simple, so easy, and absolutely painless.
Here are those benefits again:
- Reduce or eliminate anxiety
- Improve the health fo your teeth
- Strengthen your bones
- Improve your immune system
- Reduce sugar cravings
- Increase your energy
Worth it? FOR SURE!
How to stop drinking soda - the alternatives
Herbal Soda
Yes, there is such a creature and yes its delish. Although I haven't drank soda in 12 years - I do occasionally indulge in one of the adaptogenic herbal soda tinctures from Longevity Warehouse, mixed in homemade club soda. I have no affiliation with this soda alternative - I just really love the product and recommend it for my peeps that need to leave soda behind. My favs are the Reishi Cherry Cola and the Chaga Rootbeer.
Fruit-infused water
If you crave something sweet, get a water bottle and some fresh fruit and put them together. You'll stay hydrated, and it will taste sweet and refreshing. Plus, you get bonus vitamins from the fruit. Some of my favorite infused water recipes include strawberry and basil, watermelon and lime, and orange.
Flavored sparkling water
La Croix or one of the many other available brands can be lifesavers when you're craving a fizzy soda. These may take some time to get used to when you're switching from soda, but try to find a flavor you enjoy and stick with it until you develop a taste for it. Once you do, you'll wonder how you drank those sugary, syrupy sodas! Now, drinking several of these per day isn't a great alternative - because of the aluminum cans BUT if it stops you from drinking cokes - then go for it.
Black coffee
Coffee is best in moderation and best when you drink it without adding anything to it, but you can work your way there if necessary. Coffee is an excellent way to not go through caffeine withdrawals, so sip on a cup a day to keep the headaches at bay. After a week or two, you could go to 1/2 caf, and work your way down to no caffeine (if this is something you're striving for).
Unsweetened iced tea
There's nothing like iced tea on a hot day. If you're from the south, though, you may be looking at me sideways when I mention drinking it unsweetened. Add just a tad of stevia to it to sweeten it up without going into sugar overload. It's fewer sugar additives than soda has, that's for sure.
Herbal tea
Herbal teas served hot or cold can really perk up your taste buds while providing great health benefits. Green tea, chamomile, chai, peppermint, and others all have a wonderful flavor that will keep you from consuming excess sugar.
Gem Elixir
Have you ever heard of a crystal elixir? I covered this recently in an episode on structured water. And I'll link that in the show notes at Audrey Christie. Com 125. in that episode you learn exactly how to make your own structured water and a simple and non-toxic way and how it benefits your human suit. Specifically for giving up soda I recommend a gem elixir with citrine in it.
Don’t forget plain water
You should be drinking about a gallon of water a day. In the beginning, you can swap SOME of that for these other items - but the goal is to work towards no more than 1 serving of things other than water and NEVER soda.
To wrap this up -
Soda is so toxic - if you haven't seen the acidic nature of cokes or sodas, head to google and see what they can do to care batteries - don't risk your human suit! Take the steps to give up soda, start today.
If giving up soda is just the first step in your revolution to find wellness in your body, if you are struggling with an autoimmune condition or chronic illness or recurring symptoms, I have created a free resource for you, called Kickstart Your Autoimmune Revolution, And its specifically simple steps you can take right now. You can download it on the show notes page or your podcast player, or at audreychristie.com/autoimmune.
Thank you so much for tuning in, if you have a second it would mean the world to me if you could leave a rating or review! That helps me help more people start an autoimmune revolution of their own. I’d be oh so grateful.
I hope you have the most magical and restful day friends, and I challenge you to leave your world, however you can, a little better than how you found it when you got up this morning.
Be well.
