Over-eating at Holiday Parties?!? Bye-Felcia!
Who the heck is Felicia?…. Exactly, Buh-bye!
Well maybe not “buh-bye” but at least, “I see you for what you are and know how to deal with you.” The latter just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
One of the biggest challenges my Healthy Healing Jump-starters are facing right now is the holidays. Now if you are an experienced HHJ then you know exactly how to deal with it, but if not, when you start to shift the way you consume food, move your body, and love yourself, holiday parties can get the best of you and you feel like flushing all your progress and starting over in 2017.
But guess what? I have some help for you! Take look at a couple problem spots and strategies.
Problem: Err, I had a few too many last night and now I am dying for sweets.
This is quite common. Alcohol is processed in our bodies the same way as sugar, so while a glass or two of a good red wine won’t generally cause cravings…more than that, beer, or highly sugary drinks will cause sugar cravings the following day.
Solution: A general solution for this is to not overindulge. BUT if the average person was capable of this without help, then we wouldn’t be in this boat to begin with! So here is an alternate solution, all day long, the day following your over indulgence, squeeze some fresh orange juice (or pour some fresh OJ) into your water cup. This will keep your insulin leveled off and your cravings to a minimum. (Plus it will help nurse that hangover a bit…yeah we saw you dancing on the table last night!) 😉
Problem: Look at all this deliciousness! I must eat it all!
Solution: The Law of Diminishing Returns. Choose the foods/treats that you really love to taste. The first bite is amazing, the second bite is great, the third bite is really good, after that stop. This allows you to sample lots of different foods without over indulging.
Problem: I saw this article too late, I have already over-indulged on food and booze.
Solution: Self-care. Choose to forgive yourself. You can’t change the past, make optimal choices for your body mind and spirit NOW, in the present. Be gentle with yourself, recover and get right back on track. If you are tired of starting over, stop quitting on yourself.
