Welcome if this is your first time listening - I’m Audrey Christie - I’m a functional and integrative nurse nutritionist and energy medicine practitioner. I help women stop chasing symptoms and find relief and ultimately learn how to heal their bodies from autoimmune disease.
Immune System Offense Instead of Defense
I hear a lot that I tried X remedy and it didn't work.
Most often when that happens it's because they've waited too late. Waiting too late happens when we aren't in touch with our body so we don't know when something is a mess when something's coming on and waiting too long happens when we're not playing offense.
So instead of scouring Amazon or your local pharmacy when you get sick and trying to find all of the remedies...maybe, just maybe, you try a little bit of offense.
Today we're going to talk about some simple steps that you can do each day. These tips are good for the whole family. And especially good for people with autoimmune disease. These tips will help you more than that vitamin C and herbal tea and all the things that you reach for when you've already come down with something.
Immune System Tips
Get Enough Sleep (you can learn more about sleep hygiene in episode 116 and plant medicine for sleep in 117)
Getting enough quality sleep each night is so essential for a healthy immune system. Try to get the recommended 7-8 hours of sound sleep each night, which may take some practice to build up to. Studies have shown that lack of sleep significantly weakens the immune system. If you have trouble falling asleep, set up a good nightly routine to relax and prepare for sleep. Put your screens away at least an hour before bed or get some blue light protecting glasses.
Eat Your Antioxidants
Our bodies need the right fuel to fight off infections. Antioxidants clear out free radicals from the body, which can otherwise cause inflammation and weaken the immune system. Vitamins A, C, and E are rich in antioxidants and can help regulate the immune response. Make sure you're eating your vegetables and fruits to get these essential micronutrients, and if you can't get enough through your diet. "But Audrey, can I take a vitamin instead?" No, there isn't a substitute for what mama earth has given us - BUT if you are eating your antioxidants and still lacking - THEN supplement (that's why it's called SUPPLEMENT and not REPLACEMENT).
Stop Stressing (find out more about stress in autoimmune disease 118 or stress help in 094)
Stress not only affects your mental well-being, but it also takes an enormous toll on your physical health. While acute stress is sometimes useful for those short bursts of adrenaline, most of us are dealing with chronic stress. This wreaks havoc on your body and can lead to adrenal fatigue, chronic low-grade inflammation, and a weakened immune system. If you're feeling stressed out, try getting to the root of the problem and fixing that. Take some time to relax and unwind after a stressful day so that your body can recover.
Exercise, But Not Too Intensely
Exercise is so vital for overall health, but it specifically benefits the immune system by promoting helping to circulate your immune cells throughout the body. It also lowers inflammation and reduces stress levels, which is key for a robust immune system. However, some studies have found that overly intense exercise, especially without enough recovery time, can have adverse effects on your immune health. So, exercise, but give your body enough time to recover as well. My favorite is yoga - it helps my clients get in touch with their body so that they are able to know when things are shifting towards illness.
Practice Good Hygiene
While it is essential to have a strong immune system that can fight off infections, the best way to protect yourself is to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands when needed but not too frequently - over washing and over sanitizing destroys your body's innate ability to fight disease. It is wise to avoid touching your face if you can.
Go figure - if you stay away from sick people you won't get sick. Not a big surprise here. This is old and accurate science. If you are high risk or care for someone that is - avoid crowds and stay home. Wonder what is considered high risk? Reach out and I will let you know.
If you're don't follow me on social media, on Facebook or Instagram I will link to those on the show notes page. You can find my Instagram and my Facebook link there I will be showing on those pages how you can utilize your mask properly so that it has the best chance of helping you or someone else stay protected. Here it's difficult to demonstrate so I will just tell you times to wear your mask are when you are indoors around other people.
In outdoor settings, when you are running on the trail, or out jogging or cycling or walking, wearing a mask then actually reduces your ability to fight off disease be it COVID or anything else. It's still imperative not to be using up face masks and other protective equipment that Healthcare people might need additionally it's terrible for the environment so on social media this week I will be showing you the best way to make choices that allow you to stay safe.
These are crazy times we live in, and it is important as it always has been to have a good strong immune system so that you can have your best expression of them. Those suffering from a chronic illness or an autoimmune disease are at a higher risk for catching anything, up to and including a Global pandemic virus. So while taking care of your immune system it's also critical to start doing the work to heal your body from autoimmune disease so that it can protect you like it's supposed to.
I created a free resource for you, its called 5 Steps to You can Start TODAY to begin healing from Your Autoimmune Disease. Its specifically simple steps you can take right now - including changing your mindset, adding nutritious foods and help you shift to a healing path.
To wrap this up -
This is an interesting time we're living in, and boosting the immune system is at the top of everyone's priority list. Along with these daily tasks, eating as many plants as possible will give you the strong immune system you're longing for. Load up on veggies, drink copious amounts of fresh water, and lessen a load of environmental toxins by kicking them out of your house (I have a free class on that here).
Make time for things that make you happy, nourish your relationships, and make sure you feel connected. There are so many things that come together to create a robust immune system.
Thank you so much for tuning in, if you have a second it would mean the world to me if you could leave a rating or review! That helps me help more people get clear of autoimmune disease. I’d be oh so grateful.
I hope you have the most magical and restful day friends, and I challenge you to leave your world, however you can, a little better than how you found it when you got up this morning.
