Often women who develop or are suffering from an autoimmune condition have lost that mind-body connection. So today, we are going to talk about what is this mind-body connection I am speaking of, and how it benefits you and your healing journey.
Intro
Welcome if this is your first time listening - I’m Audrey Christie - I’m a functional and integrative nurse nutritionist and energy medicine practitioner. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so they can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal their bodies from autoimmune disease.
If your mind-body connection is broken...
If you are disconnected from your body, if you aren’t in touch with your body, if your mind-body connection is missing or broken, then it makes it more difficult to heal your body from an autoimmune disease or even effectively mask the symptoms with conventional or natural medicine.
I want to make sure you understand that bit there because it is so important, a mind-body connection is essential for healing, no matter your path.
Let me share a story with you...
and I have 100s of stories just like this one. One of my clients came to me taking a very popular supplement and experienced some weird side effects. She said, “Audrey, I think something is wrong with me - this is GOOD stuff - it does X, Y, Z and helps with this and that, it's not working for me, its making things worse, new problems are showing up, it must be me, I messed this up too.”
This WAS a good supplement, although it wasn't recommended by any provider, she had been listening to the marketing of the company. But the problem wasn't that she was so broken nothing could fix it.
Do you want to know what the only problem was here friends?
She wasn’t connected, she wasn’t receiving messages from her body. A better way to put it is that she was receiving the messages but instead of practicing the honoring of those messages she had practiced ignoring them. She was overstimulated, underslept, not filling her own cup first, doing everything she could to avoid stopping to see what was wrong. It’s kinda like driving your car with the check engine light and not stopping to check it because you are afraid its a big problem, right?
Stop ignoring your body's check engine light...
Instead of ignoring that check engine light, what if you allowed it, what if you looked to see what was wrong, what if you took a moment to pause, tune in, and see what the message your body is trying to send really is. And sure - it will take some practice - just like you got good at ignoring - at turning off that little nudge that says “you’ve pushed yourself your human suit far enough.” You can hone the skill the other way.
Back to the story of that same client...
The supplement wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t what her body needed. Once we re-established the connection, just like the internet the messages were flowing again and THAT supplement wasn’t what she needed - turns out she didn’t need a supplement at all.
What about the Mind-Body Connection science?
Now I can hear you here, "Audrey you usually mix the metaphysical/spiritual/energetic with the physical science" - I got you! Good news, yall! Science supports this. Long-standing science. Here’s the scoop:
Your body is functioning in continuous response to your internal (and external) environments. In our physical body, this is primarily guided by that big squishy walnut on top of your neck - the brain, that thumping thing in your chest - your heart, and that squishy trail of guts - your digestive tract.
The brain, or collectively THESE BRAINS, of course, reflects the contents for better or worse, of the body, the mind, the emotions, the Soul, and your energy.
One of the key factors in the health of your human suit, even if you are healthy, but especially in regaining your health from an autoimmune condition, is the maintenance of your body’s natural defense system, we have talked about this before - your immune system.
Your immune system is connected to the three brains of the body, the heart, the digestive tract, and the actual neurological brain and all three are controlled by neural connections, chemical reactions, neurotransmitters, hormones, and endorphins, and other big words that simply mean messengers. These messengers move about creating links or communication pathways between these systems. Physically and energetically linking the body and the mind(s).
It’s through these links, what is going on in our conscious and subconscious mind is continually affecting our body - and what I am talking about here - what is going on in your body is affecting your mind. But more than just affecting, its available for you to explore and assess to determine what that nagging issue, pain, or symptom is.
What we have done with the constant busy-ness is learned to ignore it, because tuning into what your body actually needs MAY look different that what is Instagrammable, it may look different than keeping up with the Joneses.
Who am I kidding?!? it looks completely flipping different.
Here’s an example for you - one way an autoimmune condition can happen is when a person's life goals are not being met. Yep. Is that the only cause, no, but its what we call a root cause.
When life goals aren’t being met, it can bring such frustration that bodily function goes sideways and their entire body becomes permeated with it. The result is a situation where the interventions the person tries is a reflection of the person’s agitated internal state, at every level. As the issue progresses and the mind-body connection continues to deteriorate a full-blown diagnosable or chronic disease develops.
How do you fix the mind-body connection
So how do you stop it - pause it or full stop it -and pivot to work on that mind-body connection. To put the connection back into place and begin to get clear information on what is going on with your body. Again - practice makes perfect BUT remember a mind-body connection is essential for healing, no matter your path.

To wrap this up...
symptoms, autoimmune diseases, chronic illness are trees with many roots, and one of those roots is the mind-body connection. The outward expression of what you are going through IS the expression of what we are unconscious of OR what we are ignoring internally.
