Dang…Storm season is off with a BANG in Texas! We had major spring storms that brought baseball size hail, tornados and all the wild things Texas weather brings.
Unfortunately, we weren’t prepared enough to put our cars in the garage so we’re going to need to look for a company that offers hail damage repair in Austin but other than that, we got through the first storms without a hitch!
Our little family has a good plan in place for when these storms happen. We have a little cubby in our laundry room where we all huddle up…2 adults, 2 kids, 2 (BIG) dogs and 1 cat. YIKES! How do we keep it sane?
Part of our “Keep Calm Kit” contains so tools to help keep everyone sane…and not it’s not mini-bar bottles for the adults… here’s a quick rundown of what’s in our kit:
Lavender Essential Oil – This is safe for all of our pets and kids, this brings a calming and peaceful vibe to the crowded room full of high nerves.
Citrus Essential Oil– I keep an extra in there just in case we need it. Citrus oils brighten moods and lift spirits.
Stuffies: We have 2 small stuffed animals for the girls to cuddle and play with if we have to take shelter before we can get their normal stuffies out of their rooms.
Books: They each have a favorite book to read in our keep calm kit.
Flashlight: We have a big flashlight, but we also have two little pen lights for the girls.
Coloring/Activity books: There’s nothing like sitting in a boring, overcrowded closet for 30-45 min or longer. We keep colors and a coloring book for extra fun.
Anchor: Stuffies can certainly serve as an anchor, but we like crystals too! So we keep a couple comfort/protection/grounding crystals in our kit. Hematite for grounding, rose quartz for comfort, and agate and carnelian for physical protection. Maybe your anchor is something different, just make sure it has some meaning.
How to make your own Keep Calm Kit:
- Find a container of appropriate size, I suggest one about 9×12 inches. Something slightly larger than a shoebox is suitable. We use an organizer box from the dollar store. #frugal
- Using the information above, select what is useful and age appropriate to put in your box. Things you might add in addition to what I have listed above (and some other things we have) include: batteries, phone charger, candles, child-proof lighter, etc).
- Remember that this is a “Keep Calm Kit”, not an “Oh Shit Kit,” so first aid supplies, or other things littles shouldn’t be accessing unsupervised are a no-no. Take batteries for example, our kids are old enough we don’t have to worry about them putting batteries in their mouths…the same may not be true for you.
- Keep your kit in the “safe room” in your house. If its something you have to go find, it won’t get any use.
Our “Keep Calm Kit” is for severe weather, but could also be a car kit or travel kit too!
